High-definition video is almost becoming like cell phones and the Internet – we wonder what we ever did without it.

muvee hopes to make a bigger splash in the HD/online video market by “revealing" version 8 of its home movie-making software. Reveal 8 now offers direct export to iPads and the iPhone 4, as well as direct uploading to Facebook HD and YouTube HD. It also allows you to share and enjoy home movies by uploading them directly to shwup, muvee’s online private video- and photo-sharing service; burn DVDs; and export movies directly to an iPod, mobile phone or PSP.

“muvee Reveal 8 was refreshed in response to the popularity of the iPad, iPhone4 and consumer HD camcorders," said Terence Swee, muvee CEO. “By offering these new updates free to current muvee Reveal 8 users, they’ll be able to enjoy their home movies in even higher quality on these devices, and on YouTube and Facebook."

muvee says Reveal 8 also automatically adjusts aspect ratios, resolutions and compression to achieve the highest quality video and audio playback for each device. For example, for optimal output for the iPhone4 and iPad, which typically provide a resolution of up to 720p, the H264 Main Profile is used; but the aspect ratios for these devices differ – the iPad is 4:3 and the iPhone4 is 16:9. With four times the pixel count of previous iPhone models, the retina display on the iPhone4 is also capable of much more if you feed it right.

muvee’s timing might be spot on for taking on the iPad market. eMarketer projects overall worldwide tablet sales will reach 81.3 million units in 2012, up from 15.7 million in 2010. The research firm expects iPad sales to increase to nearly 20 million next year and more than 30 million by 2012.

muvee Reveal hopes to play a key role in Internet video sharing. Personalization features allow users to make movies stand out from millions of online videos by inserting their own logos, watermarks, avatars or photos. Simple editing tools and full-screen previews are also included for automatic brightness control, color correction, red eye reduction, zoom in/out, rotation and more.

Reveal 8 will set you back $79.95.
