As people spend more time with smartphones and less time with traditional media, there are huge opportunities in the mobile advertising space. And it appears that the Android platform is taking advantage of that.
Millennial Media says ad impressions from Android phones on its network grew 8 percent last month, increasing to a market share of 46 percent. That compares with a 32 percent share for Apple iPhones and 16 percent on BlackBerrys. Millennial says December was the first month Android had taken the crown on its network.
It can hardly come as a surprise, as Android-based smartphones outsold iPhones and BlackBerrys in the second and third quarters of 2010 – not bad considering the first Android phone didn’t go on sale until late in 2008.
Millennial says smartphones now account for 60 percent of mobile phone ad impression share, with touchscreen devices growing by 10 percent.
IDC Research says Millennial is the third-largest mobile ad network behind Google’s AdMob and Apple’s iAd.
